Transfer a Domain

Transfer a Domain

You may transfer a domain name in one of the following ways:

Registrar Transfer

Before beginning a registrar transfer, you must unlock the domain and get the authorization code (also called "EPP Code" or "Auth-Info") from your current domain service provider.

Once you submit a transfer order to us, we will do the following:

  1. For a dot-ca domain, we will send the transfer request to the dot-ca registry which typically succeed immediately and the domain will be available to be managed in your 10Dollar.ca account within 24 hours.

  2. For other extensions such as dot-com, the process can take longer to complete. We will obtain authorization from the domain holder by sending an email to the email address as listed in the public Whois database. Please ensure the email address is valid and operational and follow the instructions given in the authorization email. (Check your spam/junk/bulk folder since sometimes these messages are flagged as spam.) As the gaining registrar, we must complete this form of authorization (FOA) before we may send the transfer request to the registry. It may take up to 7 days before the domain transfer succeed. Please note, the current registrar should also send a notification email to the registrant. This gives you an opportunity to expedite the process by explicitly instructing the current registrar to release the domain sooner.

Registrant Transfer

To make this change, visit the "My Domains" section, click the domain name directly, and then click "Edit Domain Contact Information". Update the registrant details as needed. You can apply this update to multiple domains at once.

Please note the registrant also known as "Registered Name Holder" is the entity listed in the registrant field and is the legal "owner" of the domain name. As a 10Dollar.ca account holder, you are acting on behalf of the registrant (if different than you). You must obtain clear permission from the existing registrant prior to make such changes.

Other Processes

  • Domain hosting Transfer or switching from one hosting company to another:

You can move your webhosting services to a new provider by updating the domain name servers (DNS). To do so, visit the "My Domains" section, click the domain you want to manage, and then click DNS Information. Enter the new DNS information as per instructions given by your new host. This will point your domain to the new host. Alternatively you may use "Advanced DNS Manager" to point the domain to the new host by creating the corresponding DNS records.

  • Move a domain between accounts, let someone else control and manage the domain:

You can move the domain to a different 10Dollar.ca account holder. To do so, visit the "My Domains" section, click the domain that you wish to move, and then click "Move This Domain To Another Profile" and follow the instructions. Once completed, the domain will only be available to be managed in the new account.
